Windows are an extremely important part of home design. New windows can completely restore the exterior of an older house while worn, outdated windows can negatively impact your home’s curb appeal.  Not only are windows one of the most important aesthetic traits of your home, they are also a crucial part of your home’s structure. Unfortunately, they do not last forever. Windows will start to show signs when they are worn out, signaling that it is time to consider window replacement. Window replacement is a valuable investment for your home that will save energy costs, reduce noise and make your home more appealing and comfortable.

1. Jammed Windows

Springtime is fast approaching and many people will be opening their windows and letting fresh air in as soon as it starts warming up. However, years of weather can cause the wood surrounding your windows to expand and contract, making them difficult to open and close. While some changing can be expected of any wood, it is time to consider replacing your windows if they are consistently warped or stuck.  Once the wood expands and loses its shape, air, water and insects can find their way through the window- bringing unwanted temperature changes, moisture and visitors into your home. Replacing your windows will help make opening and closing them much easier with the added benefit of keeping unwanted guests out.

2. Drafts or Uneven Room Temperature

An uncomfortable home is another sign that it might be time to replace windows in your home. It is common to have leaks around windows, however, they should not dramatically affect the comfort of different rooms. Window drafts during the winter or a room so hot in the summer that you can’t stand to be in it are signs that you should start checking into window replacement. Not only will upgrading your windows make your home a more comfortable place to be, it can also save you money. Window replacements are a worthwhile investment that will lower your utility bill and keep your family happy.

3. Mold and Mildew

A leaky window allows moisture in your home and makes it hard to control the humidity. Whether it is summer or winter, the air in your home could be the perfect place for mold and mildew to grow. Regular exposure to moisture can also cause water staining and wood rot around your windows. These issues should be addressed as soon as possible. In some cases it only takes mold and mildew 24-48 hours to begin growing. this mold will eventually release spores that can cause allergies, asthma and infections in people with weaker immune systems.

If you think the mold and mildew in your home is caused by leaky windows call Echols Home Improvements to schedule an inspection. We can help determine the problem and offer solutions.

4. Frost, Condensation or Fog

Double pane windows are made from two pieces of glass separated by a thin layer of sealant or a spacer. Gasses like argon and krypton are usually used to fill this empty space. Unfortunately, sometimes these seals break, causing moisture to seep into the area between the two panes. This moisture can freeze up, look foggy or bead up in condensation on the glass. This causes windows to look foggy or dirty and makes them hard, if not virtually impossible, to clean. We can help you determine if this is the cause of your foggy or frost covered windows and whether window replacement can help alleviate this problem.
